'Fair And Tender Ladies'  Gene Clark

"But love grows cold as love grows older
And fades away like morning dew"

"On every link a heart did dangle
Of another maid he'd loved and wronged"

'Come All You Fair and Tender Ladies' (aka "Tiny Sparrow" or "Little Sparrow") is an American folk music ballad, originating from the Appalachian region. It has been recorded under either of its two title variations by numerous artists, including The Carter Family, Pete Seeger, Joan Baez (zie hieronder 'Silver Dagger'), Odetta, Peter, Paul and Mary, The Kingston Trio, Leon Bibb, Makem and Clancy, Emmylou Harris, Bob Dylan, Dave Van Ronk, The Rankin Family, The Country Gentlemen, Murray Head and Dolly Parton. The title of the song varies from recording to recording and prior to the 1960s, the song was usually known as "Tiny Sparrow" or "Little Sparrow". Some versions substituted the "Sparrow" with "Swallow," another form of species of bird. (SOURCE: Pete Seeger version of the song). In more recent times, the song's title sometimes finds "Maidens" substituted for "Ladies," and "Come All Ye" or "Come All You" sometimes omitted. In 2010, Marideth Sisco performed a portion of the song in the film Winter's Bone.

'Fair And Tender Ladies'   Gene Clark and Carla Olson

My daddy was a handsome gambler
He had a chain five miles long
On every link a heart did dangle
Of another maid he'd loved and wronged

He'd tell to you some loving story
He'd make you think he believed them true
But love grows cold as love grows older
And fades away like morning dew

I'd rather be in some dark hollow
Where the sun refused to shine
Than to live here in Missouri
With your memory always haunting my mind

Come all ye fair and tender ladies
Take warning how you court your men
They're like a star on a summer's morning
First they appear then they're gone again

Niemand minder dan Joan Baez verwerkte dit lied in haar song 'Silver Dagger':

'Silver Dagger'  Joan Baez (hier live 1965)

Don't sing love songs, you'll wake my mother
She's sleeping here right by my side
And in her right hand a silver dagger,
She says that I can't be your bride.

All men are false, says my mother,
They'll tell you wicked, lovin' lies.
The very next evening, they'll court another,
Leave you alone to pine and sigh.

My daddy is a handsome devil
He's got a chain five miles long,
And on every link a heart does dangle
Of another maid he's loved and wronged.

Go court another tender maiden,
And hope that she will be your wife,
For I've been warned, and I've decided
To sleep alone all of my life.

'Silver Dagger' (episode uit Inspector George Gently) met Ebony Buckle.

Don't sing love songs, you'll wake your mother
She's laying there, right by your side
And in her right hand, a silver dagger
She says that I, can't be your bride

All maids are false, says your mother
They'll tell you wicked, winning lies
And the very next evening, they'll love another
Leave you alone, to pine and cry

Go find yourself, a rich young maiden
And hope that she, will be your wife
For I've been warned, and I've decided
To live alone, all of my life
